Review of 'Platform'

Rating:2 User: YOR

This is a bit of a weird one in the Spectrum archives as it was originally set out as a German game called Platform, only now it's in English and published by Big K as Platform Leaper. To further add to the confusion Platform is listed here but the Spectrum Computing link directs to Platform Leaper. Anyway, you have to jump from platform to platform in order to reach the top to finish a level, the problem with this though was how do you jump? Q and W move left and right but I could not figure out how to jump at all, luckily though it was the German version to the rescue and indeed it told you how to jump, it is Symbol Shift, which in today's keyboards in Right Shift, along with the direction you wish to go and you must take a running start before jumping. So now having worked everything out I can now play the game properly for the sake of the review, and I've got to be honest, I wasn't expecting to be any good, and it's not, but it's not terrible. There is a degree of playability towards it but the running start element will throw people off, especially when you don't have instructions unless you download a version of another language and successfully translate like I did. I could say we're in completely the wrong direction from Anima and Black Star but then we were always going to be as they are more recent titles written in Machine Code and this is from 1984 written in BASIC, but saying that, while it's not great, I expected this to be shit, and it's not that either. But it's slow, it's confusing unless you translate the German version to work out its full controls and the levels from what I gather are the same, or at least one and two are, but level three is different but frankly I don't care enough to find out. So it is a typical BASIC game with not a lot going for it, but my expectations were low and it exceeded them so it has that going for it.
